Arise

In the records of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus it is interesting to note the use three times of the word translated in the King James Version, "Arise." It is not of tremendous importance but it does have a significance we shall observe.

Saul was told to "arise" and go into the city of Damascus where he would be told what he must do (Acts 9: 9). Ananias was told to "arise" and go where Saul was (Acts 9: 11). When Ananias met Saul he told him to "arise" and be baptized (Acts 22: 16). All three words are the same in the original language of the Scriptures.

What seems to me to be noteworthy is how these people, when told to "arise," did not refuse to do so but promptly obeyed. We can understand the hesitancy of Ananias when we realize what he knew of Saul. But once things were explained, as Paul said (Acts 26: 19), "I was not disobedient."

Should not we "arise" and obey whatever the Lord directs us to do?
